Kolkata is providing patronage to artistic activities in the Indian tradition since this was capital of British India.The Govt. Art School founded in 1864,Calcutta Art Society in 1889, the Bangiya Kala Parishad (Bengal Art Society) in 1905, Indian Society of Oriental Art in 1907 was formed for teaching Western and Indian style of art. Many styles of art traditional Mughal and Rajput style, Japanese and Chinese style, has influenced the art world of Kolkata. The traditional Bengali folk art – pat chitra or pat of Kalighat is strongly present in medieval Bengali literature. The city has patronized a number of world famous artists and art critics.

Art galleries like Academy of Fine Arts, Birla Academy of Art and other art galleries of the city acts as stage for the artists. Montmartre of Varnaparichay will have art galleries for regular exhibition of Classic and Contemporary Art and sculpture of famous and rising artists as well as occasional retrospective, round the year.
